Kathmandu Airport Tips

Tips for getting in/out of Kathmandu Airport (and into Singapore)

Airport security rules prevent our guide from coming inside to help you with your arrival and departure so we have prepared this tip sheet to help you through. You may like to print this out to carry with you.

 Arrival:

It’s as simple as following the crowds to the arrivals hall and filling in your arrival card (if they were not already given out on the plane) and then your next step depends on the method you chose to get your Nepal visa.

If you obtained a visa prior to leaving home then proceed to the immigration counter signed ‘with visa’ and present your passport – it can save time to have it open at the visa page.

If you applied for a visa online prior to arrival (remember it’s only valid for 15 days) - do this here now. Also complete this now too:

1. Have your application printout and passport ready

2. Take your printout to the payment counter to pay your fee - we recommend paying the correct amount US$30, however major currencies are accepted and there is an exchange counter available if you do not have one of the currencies accepted at the payment counter;

3. Present your printout and payment receipt along with your passport to the immigration counter signed ‘visa on arrival’.

4. It’s sensible to check that the validity dates on your payment receipt and your visa sticker to be sure there’s no error.

If getting your visa on arrival:

1. Complete your visa application on one of the electronic kiosks in the arrival hall;

2. Take the submission receipt to the payment counter and follow steps 2,3 and 4 above.

While there are various payment methods now available in the airport along with the visa application kiosks, malfunctions can occur and we strongly recommend that you carry the correct money (US$30 is recommended) and a passport photo with you just in case.

No matter which visa method you're planning to do, be sure to keep your boarding pass with you until you're outside the airport as you may be required to show it with your visa forms and your luggage tag receipt before exiting.

When you have passed through immigration, proceed downstairs and through a security check to baggage collection. There is usually a wait for the bags to arrive and patience is a virtue. Baggage trolleys are free. You may need to show your baggage tags when leaving the airport so it’s a good idea to have them ready.

As you leave the building you will see a vibrant crowd of people, most of whom are eager to take your bags, get you into a taxi and to their favourite hotel. Don’t worry - we will be there waiting for you with a sign. Look for our blue and white Himalayan Trails 'Buddha eyes' logo and go to meet the person holding the sign, who will help you through the crowd to your vehicle and whisk you out of the madness to your hotel to RELAX after your long journey!

 Departure:

12 May - Complete this form to get into Singapore. Nepal hotel doctor will sign off our Antigen tests this day too. Download this SG tracing app too.

You should arrive 2 ½ hours before your flight is scheduled to depart. If you have booked your airport departure with us, then please double check the time that the car will come to meet you at your hotel.

As with your arrival, we cannot escort you inside due to airport rules, so we will deliver you to the departures area and must bid farewell there. There may be people there who will offer you a trolley for a fee but you can obtain your own trolley and we suggest that you leave the bags in the car, get your trolley and then load up before saying goodbye to your driver.

You then queue up to get inside the airport (to check which line you should be in, check the signs above the entrance doors). You will need to show your ticket/printout/e-ticket on your phone and your passport to get inside the building. Your bags will be scanned; check that you get a baggage tag stamped by security for every bag. The check in counters are straight ahead as you pass through security.

After you have checked in, go upstairs to Immigration to fill out your departure card (it’s a good idea to bring your own pen), proceed through Immigration and then relax in the departure area with a cuppa and a snack or do some last minute shopping. There is a lounge and a café on a level higher up as well as the shops you see as you emerge from Immigration.

When they call your flight (you will need to keep track of the time in case you don’t hear the call), you go through the final security check. There are lines for men and women and they will search your bags by hand after sending them through the scanner. There’s not a great deal of consistency about what is allowed, so basically the less you carry on with you the easier it all is.

Proceed to the departure lounge and wait until your flight is called for your last walk/bus ride across the tarmac…for now.

GET READY TO PART WITH YOUR CASH
(AT THE LAST MOMENT POSSIBLE)

After you reserve your place, stand by for a final specific price for your specific situation.

How to keep this low risk in the face of COVID

Up to Sunday 10 April for both Expedition teams - 100% of airfare and expedition payments are 100% transferable. Hence, there is no loss if we postpone by this day, to go in the Oct/Nov or next Apr/May season.

After Sunday 10 April - insurance will pay out for ‘most’ risks. If you do not have insurance (at any time after your deposit is paid and by this date at the very latest), you are at high risk of being asked to pay anyhow, to ensure your fellow team members do not need to take on your costs.

FYI - These traveller friendly terms have been negotiated:

  • Airfare is 100% transferable and 90% refundable up to 24 hours before departure.

  • Expedition deposit is 100% transferable and 90% refundable up to 2 weeks before departure.

  • Expedition final payment is 100% transferable and 100% refundable up to 24 hours before departure.

  • Expedition payments are non refundable from departure day. But we may get something back from our guide’s “reasonable cost recovery” policy.

YOUR PAYMENT PLAN

ASAP:

  • Pay US$500 expedition deposit to Derek.

  • Pay airfare direct.

  • Pay insurance direct. Now. And no later than Sunday 10 April.

Travel Insurance & Alpine Rescue

Travel Insurance & Alpine Rescue

Don’t worry, be happy. It will soon pass, whatever it is.

You have 3 options - pick one:

OPTION 1: ALLIANZ INSURANCE - SOLID COVER AT LOW COST

New Zealand
- NZ$103 Expedition I - Mera - from here.
- NZ$88 Expedition II - Annapurna - from here.

Australia
- AU$143 Expedition 1 - Mera - from here.

Singapore
- SG$158 Expedition I - Mera - from here.
- SG$136 Expedition II - Annapurna - from here.

Allianz:

  • Covers all typical needs, including Covid before and after departure (including if a travel companion or family member get Covid, or you are suspected to have Covid as a named close contact).

  • Does not cover you if any country does a general lock down before or after departure.

  • “Likely” cover you to 6,500m from NZ (see page 9, #14(xii) vs #14(iv)), do not from SG (see page 30, #12), nor from AU (see page 22).

Optional add-on for Private Expedition I to Mera - While Allianz may do a quality mountain rescue, you can help ensure this by adding Global Rescue Emergency Evacuation for US$169.

If you want more than Allianz offers, hit them up direct, or try CoverMore (no go from NZ) or World Nomads. Otherwise, go for option 2 or 3 below …

OPTION 2: GLOBAL RESCUE INSURANCE - HIGH COVER AT HIGH COST

For a total of US$634 Global Rescue Travel Insurance (US$465) + Emergency Evacuation (US$169) will cover all typical needs (like Allianz above) plus to any altitude from NZ, SG and AU, plus any country’s general lock down.

(Or for a total of US$867 Global Rescue Travel Insurance (US$698) + Emergency Evacuation (US$169) also includes Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) and Interruption For Any Reason (IFAR) add-ons, that pay out 75% of trip costs for ANY cancel/interruption reason).

Problem - Nepal is not currently covered (see page 20, #26) due to current negative USA travel advisory!

OPTION 3: IMG INSURANCE - TOTAL COVER AT HIGH COST

For US$580 IMG Travel Insurance will cover all typical needs (like Allianz above) plus to any altitude from NZ, SG and AU and any country general lock down (like Global Rescue above), plus while there’s a negative USA travel advisory.

(Or for US$871 you can also get Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) and Interruption For Any Reason (IFAR) add-ons that pay out 75% of trip costs for ANY cancel/interruption reason).

Optional add-on for Private Expedition I to Mera - While IMG may do a quality mountain rescue, you can help ensure this by adding Global Rescue Emergency Evacuation for US$169.

But the secret here is to pay US40 for Nepal medical only, by reducing the sum insured to $200 - this covers you to top of the world.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

It all comes down to your personal risk tolerance.

Sarah and Maria will be great with Option 1. So will you all coming from NZ - if you’re happy with Kristen’s (good) assessment.

I selected Option 1 = Allianz (SG$158) for typical coverage (but it will not go over 3,000m) + IMG Travel Insurance (US$41) for full alpine recovery and medical cover.

I may want to add Global Rescue Emergency Evacuation (US$169) to this, if I want total crazy cover.

I am unlikely to to add the CFAR/IFAR add-ons.

TIMELINE TO PAY INSURANCE

Do not pay insurance until its necessary. See more here.

5 KEY THINGS

1) Gastro

It’s easy to get sick in a 3rd world country. Dehydration from gastro issues will impact your ability to deal with altitude too. It pays to be paranoid:

  • Never put anything to your lips. Unless you’ve cleaned it personally. Includes all cutlery, crockery, bottles, etc, etc.

  • Never brush teeth with local water. Use bottled water.

  • Never drink bottled water. Unless you hear the seal crack as you open it.

  • Never eat raw vege or fruit. Unless you personally clean them. With certified bottled water.

  • Never eat meat in the hills.

  • Wash hands often. But you’ve learned this one recently eh.

  • See more from Everest guide here.

2) Extreme cold

Keep hydrated and well fed, and bring the good gear.

3) Altitude

This is a very readable run down from a guy who’s been up Everest a few times.

Which links to this Princeton outdoor guide.

And Jerry found this guide from an experienced trekking guide - how to prevent it & treat it.

Finally - this is a good place to start the ‘science’. Which leads to this medical note about altitude … in short:

“Above an altitude of 3,000m, individuals should not increase their sleeping elevation by more than 500m per day and should include a rest day (ie, no ascent to higher sleeping elevation) every 3 to 4 days.”

Note: Others say this should be 300m. And others say 700m is ok too.

FYI
- our trip plan adheres to this ‘rule’.
- you and guides will carry all altitude medications.
- guide carries medical oxygen, including at the 50th Everest feast for the Annapurna team.
- guide carries portable altitude chambers.
- checking: guide carries a pulse oximeter.

4) Medications

See gear list around row 200.

Kathmandu can supply all meds at low cost. If money is most important, buy in KTM. If safety is most important, buy at home.

Visit your doctor now - for all travel needs and special meds needed.

This US CDC note does a good job of saying how to manage altitude and use the meds:

* Key prevention technique is deep breathing at all times?

* I’m ALL for waiting to see what happens, and taking Diamox IF needed. Also does away with the issue of being confused about feeling AMS symptoms that might just be a reaction to preventative Diamox. But ...

* We fly from 1,400m to 2,850m (sleep 1 night Lukla), then fly to 3,600m (sleep 2 nights Khote), then walk to 4,360m (sleep 2 nights Thagnak), then walk to 4,950m (sleep 2 nights Khare), then walk to 5,415m (sleep 1 night Mera La), then walk to 5,800m (sleep one night high camp) … hence this contains a few days pushing the ‘500m per day’ rule, so this may be a GOOD CASE for starting Diamox the day we land in KTM?

* If taking Diamox AMS preventative - its 125mg 2x per day (or double dose, as needed), hence need about 15 x 250mg pills.

* If taking Diamox AMS treatment - its 250mg 2x per day, hence need about 30 x 250mg pills.

* If taking Dex AMS treatment - its 4mg every 6hr, hence need about 10 x 4mg pills - descent is top of mind.

* If taking Dex HACE treatment - its 8mg 1x plus 4mg every 6hr, hence need about 10 x 4mg pills - immediate descent is key.

* If taking Nife HAPE treatment - its 30mg every 12hr, hence need about 5 x 4mg pills - immediate descent is key.

Bottom line - if we all have a small stash 5-10 of each of the HACE/HAPE pills + 20-30 Diamox depending on your personal view about needing to take them preventatively or not, then we’re all good to go.

5) Oh, and Covid

  • Singapore Airlines has all you need to know here.

  • If you want to know more, you can also read this.

  • And to take it over the top, you can try this too.

  • Bottom line: Get all paperwork done, wear face mask and shield/glasses on plane, sanitize hands like a crazy person. (Note: We have a doctor supervised pre-departure test setup at our Kathmandu hotel the day we fly to Singapore).
